Today in Bluejay History (12/20)

December 20, 1998 — Creighton beats #18 Oklahoma State 66-60, marking the Bluejays’ first home win against a Top 25 team in non-conference play since Eddie Sutton’s Jays beat #7 Houston 78-77 in 1973.

Former CU coach Sutton was on the bench for the Cowboys, and watched as Rodney Buford didn’t make his usual appearance in the starting lineup. But when all was said and done Creighton’s all-time leading scorer would pour in 20 points in the Bluejays’ upset against the Cowboys.

Buford hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 1:54 to play in the game. Then, after an Adrian Peterson (no, not that Adrian Peterson) missed jump shot, Ryan Sears corralled the rebound, found Buford, who then got it back to Sears for the go-ahead 3-pointer. Doug Swenson would hit 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch, and the Birdcage would storm the court.
