Today in Bluejay History (2/13)

February 13, 1993 — Creighton’s men’s tennis team defeats Illinois State for the first time in school history.

In a match at the Evergreen Racket Club in Normal, Illinois, the host Redbirds got on the board early by capturing the doubles point. Their duos of Stephen Bell and Paul Smith and Roger Juers and Brian Edumunds defeated their respective Creighton opponents, Tom Lilly and Brian Langenkamp and Alfred Magar and Luisen Peon. Only Paul Delatore and Karl Monson claimed a victory in the doubles for Creighton.

Heading into the singles portion trailing 1-0, Monson evened the score with a 6-0, 6-3 win at #2 singles. ISU came right back with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #5 singles. But all the other matches went to third and final sets to determine winners.

Peon and Delatore battled back for the Bluejays and gave CU the 3-2 lead, then Lilly clinched the team match in #1 singles. Langenkamp finished the match with a win, to give Creighton the 5-2 win.
