August 20, 2006 — Creighton, sporting a top 10 ranking before the official start of the men’s soccer season, defeats #5 Clemson 3-1 in penalty kicks to win the Westfield Cup exhibition tournament in Akron, Ohio.
The Jays and Tigers clawed to a 2-2 draw, with Creighton coming out on top in PKs. It would mark an early highlight of the 2006 season; just two days earlier, the Jays defeated #9 Akron. But the regular season would start on a sour note, with Bob Warming’s club on the wrong end of two matches against top 15 teams #12 Indiana (0-1 in 2OT) and #15 Notre Dame (1-4) the next weekend.
