Today in the Valley

Today in the Valley: December 4, 2009

Alabama State (1-4) @ Evansville (3-2)

Roberts Stadium

Evansville, Indiana 7:05 PM CST

Evansville has the chance to get another game over .500 here tonight.  It took a double overtime shootout (91-90) against Tennessee Tech on Tuesday to snag that third win against two losses.  After 49:55 of play freshman Colt Ryan hit a jumper with 5 seconds to go to put the Purple Aces up for good.  After the officials ruled a tip-in after the buzzer, it was official, the Purple Aces won in overtime.  Another win tonight makes two in a row and some momentum for the young squad.

Hornets come to Evansville to take on Evansville for the first time.  After reaching the NCAA tournament last season with a 22-10 record, this season has been quite the opposite.  They were in Chicago two nights ago and loss by 8 to DePaul (who also beat UNI).  This will be the third game of five straight road game for the Hornets.  Menji Mundadi had 13 points against DePaul and is the leading scorer.

SIU-Edwardsville (0-6) @ Drake (2-4)

Knapp Center

Des Moines, Iowa 7:37 PM CST – Mediacom-IA

Hy-Vee Classic

First round games of the Hy-Vee Classic take place tonight in Des Moines.  It’s the first game of a four-game homestand which is their longest of the season.  They won a close game at Austin Peay their last time out.  Early in the season they have battled an injury to star Josh Young.  While he gets back into game shape, Ryan Wedel has taken over as the main scoring threat.  He had 21 in that game against Austin Peay.

The Cougars coming in to this game still searching for that first W.  They’ve had a touch stretch going on the road to Illinois and now they will be facing their third Valley team of the season.  They lost at home to Illinois State by 22 and went on the road and played Evansville and lost by 30.  Mark Yelovich is the lone Cougar averaging double figures with a season high 26 coming in a loss to Lipscomb.

Drake’s first home game in over two weeks, the Dog Pound and the crowd should be enough to carry the team.
