Tulsa scores late to halt Creighton’s winning streak at two

Tulsa sophomore forward Jadyn Chee’s scored towards the tail end of the regulation to hand Ross Paule’s Bluejays their first setback of the season on Thursday night.

Chee, a former top recruit and transfer from West Virginia, found the back of the net with 3:20 left in the second half to give the Golden Hurricane a 1-0 victory, dropping Creighton to 2-1-0 on the season.

The Bluejays thought they had taken a 1-0 lead of their own midway through the first half, but freshman midfielder Abigail Santana had what would have been her third goal in as many matches waived off in the 24th minute because CU was offside. The Jays had produced a 15-7 edge in total shots, including an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal and five corner kick opportunities to Tulsa’s one before Chee went top shelf with her right foot in a 1v1 with Creighton freshman defender Peighton Steffen.

Steffen headed off Chee’s run to the end line, making a cross into the box difficult, but Chee turned back to her right and fired a shot over the outstretched arms of Creighton sophomore goalkeeper Keelan Terrell that snuck in just under the crossbar. It was the first win of the season for the Golden Hurricane after getting outscored 6-0 in losses to Pittsburgh and UTSA.

The loss continues a trend for CU of creating chances, but coming up empty on the finish, something Paule noted after both wins over Montana and Drake. Creighton had 20 shots on goal in those two matches, but had only four goals to show for it. They added eight more empty trips to that tally against the Golden Hurricane.

The Jays will hangout in Tulsa, Oklahoma over the weekend to kick off a four-match stretch against Summit League opponents beginning with Oral Roberts on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. They’ll return to Omaha after that to host South Dakota (Sep. 2), South Dakota State (Sep. 5), and North Dakota State (Sep. 9) at Morrison Stadium.
