Heading into week three of the Metro Summer League, this is the time in the summer where teams scramble to field a team, as many players that have family out of town leave since they have a break from summer school and training around the Fourth of July holiday. That was the case for many players this week. However that did not mean there weren’t some fun games and great performances by individuals.
Justin Patton, Khyri Thomas, Marcus Foster, and others created some great highlights from this week’s games. Here is the breakdown of the games from Thursday night at the Omaha Sports Academy.
NEBHSSPORTS.COM 90, Rooferees 73
This game was one of the feature games of the night, mainly because of NEBHSSPORTS.COM having most, if not all, of their key players playing as well as seeing whether they could continue their winning ways and stay undefeated. A large crowd was on hand to see what would happen. The Rooferees were very shorthanded, only able to field a team of five players including organizer Jason Isaacson and former Husker John Turek. It was close at halftime.
However, it was the performance of Creighton freshman Justin Patton, as well as sophomore Khyri Thomas that stole the show in this one. Patton had a double-double by halftime.

The Rooferees only having five players complicated things more for them when Patton did this:

The sheer depth of NEBHSSPORTS.COM sort of made this game a bit of a runaway. Khyri Thomas got into the action as well in the second half. First with the lob to KJ Scott:

And then Thomas getting into the action himself with back to back dunks including one he passed to himeself.

Needless to say, NEBHSSPORTS.COM is now 3-0 and the team to beat this summer it appears. Some final stats:
@xThottiePippen 16 pts, 6 reb, 3 ast; @ChiefWADD 15 pts, 5-6 FG (3-3 3FG), 5 ast. @Winglenut24 5 pts including a step-back 3, 2 stl.

BD 95, UNO Alumni 75
On paper, this was a matchup of two undefeated teams. When it came to the court, UNO Alumni playing with disaster finally caught up to them as BD ran away from them for a 20 point win. It was close in the first half similar to the game above with NEBHSSPORTS. BD also pulled away in the second half. Right now if you are looking at two teams you want to meet up at this point, BD and NEBHSSPORTS.COM are the two teams that are bringing it every week so far. If things go to script, then they won’t meet until the MBL playoffs at the end of the season. BD goes to 3-0 and UNO Alumni falls to 2-1.
Apex Foster Care 100, OFWF 78
OFWF was without Creighton’s Davion Mintz in tonight’s game. His contributions could have been the difference in the loss to Apex (Peru St.). Apex basically had their way with OFWF including a spectacular posterize dunk by James Dumes on one of the OFWF bigs. OFWF falls to 2-1 while Apex gathers their first win of the summer.
Going Vertical 89, EQ School of Hair 83
There was some good fun going around before the game when it was announced earlier in the day that Maurice Watson was going to be out of town for tonight’s game and UNO’s Tre’Shawn Thurman threw it back at him.
Roster update: Mo Watson and Zach Hanson will not be playing tonight at Summer League. EQ School of Hair will be impacted.

yeah it woulda been crazyyyyyy lol. You might as well get 50 https://t.co/mTfHJjoPt0
— Maurice Watson Jr. (@mauricewatsonjr) June 30, 2016
After all the fun was over with, both Going Vertical and EQ School of Hair were both shorthanded and GV squeaked out the win to go 2-1, while EQ fell to 0-3.
Regulators W, Judd Knispel Insurance L
It turns out we were wrong when we tweeted out earlier in the day that Marcus Foster was not going to be playing on Thursday when he is dropping bombs like this:

And this:

It turns out the Creighton player that as missing from this game was Kaleb Joseph. Anyway, our staff didn’t capture the final score of this game as Judd Knispel got buried by the Regulators. The Regulators are now 2-1 while Judd Knispel is 0-3.
Bank of Nebraska 82, Lopers 80
Bank of Nebraska held on by hitting free throws when needed, similar to what they did last week to get the win over the Lopers. Former Creighton Bluejay Devin Brooks had 15 points and 12 rebounds in the victory. Bank of Nebraska goes to 2-1 and the Lopers fall to 1-2.
Winning Mentality 90, Narmi Group @ Baird 89
PUN ALERT!!!!! Winning Mentality kept their winning mentality to get the squeaker win over the Creighton loaded (current and former) Narmi Group @ Baird 90-89. WM moves to 2-1 after suffering a first week loss, while Narmi Group falls to 1-2.
Shanks Law Firm 73, Air Force 55
Shanks bounced back from the double-digit loss to BD last week to get a convincing victory over the Offutt Air Force team.
