The 2022-23 season began with immense hype, as the Jays were ranked No. 9 nationally in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches poll, and they were picked to win the Big East Conference. Four starters were named to the Preseason Watch List at their respective position.
After enduring a six-game losing streak while Ryan Kalkbrenner was sidelined, they rebounded with an eight-game win streak that started with a victory over No. 19 Providence and also included wins over No. 13 Xavier and No. 21 Connecticut in addition to double-digit road victories at Butler, Georgetown and Seton Hall. Then came March, where they validated the preseason hype by advancing to the South Regional Final by virtue of wins over NC State, Baylor, and Princeton before falling one point shy of a Final Four berth.
